Magic in Aelor is as ancient and dangerous as the gods themselves. Much has been discovered in the study of magic from the recent uncovery of the ruins at Melchor, yet most of the knowledge once known in the Elder days is lost to eternity, buried with the sorcerers and warlocks of an all but forgotten era. What little is known now is only a shadow of the power which exists in the Ether.

Those who wield the power to tap into the Ether and shape its energy are known to most as Magus. The word Magus is both the singular and plural term for one who uses magic. While, in the past, it has typically been a term for someone who has reached a certain level of training or power, the word has fallen into usage amongst those unfamiliar with magic as an all-purpose identifier.

However, to the wizards and the like of Merilon, as well as to those who are more learned in the matters of magic, the term Magus is used only for one who has proven his knowledge in the arcane arts. Most Magus who reside in Aris are members of the Magus Society, and they have certain guidelines when it comes to conduct and practice. The Magus Council is the ruling seat of Merilon, and is made up entirely of Society members. They govern magical matters as well as the city itself.

A High Magus is often identified by his item of power, most often a staff, but occasionally something a bit more unusual, such as the Sword of Elil carried by High Magus Drothar.
