Character creation

Post by Aelor » Fri Dec 10, 2004 11:24 am

There have been many questions regarding characters and character creation with 3rd edition and my campaign. Here is the promised document. It will be dynamic and I will update it as necessary.

1. When rolling ability scores, use 4d6, rerolling any 1s, and then drop the lowest score.

2. Please use the races listed on the site. Humans and half-orcs are as in the Player's Handbook. The others are slightly different, and there are a few extra choices.

3. Classes as are in the Player's Handbook. Paladins are the only exception, and are called Holy Warriors. If you wish to be a Holy Warrior, let me know and I'll give you the lowdown.

4. All new characters start at 2nd level. This may be 2 levels of one class, or one level of each of two classes. If you do two different classes, please pay attention to which class was the first level, and which was second. It matters for things such as skill points. Basically, build your character as a 1st level one, then once done, add in the second level as if you had gained it by playing. This will make things much less confusing.

5. All characters start with the maximum hit points at 1st level. All other levels are rolled, rerolling all 1s.

6. Each character can choose a special ability or special item. This can be something as common as having the spell-like ability Light, to having the ability to Sense Direction when above ground, to always knowing what time it is, to being able to move 40 instead of 30, to having a +1 dagger that was your father's before he died. Any ability is subject to my approval, and don't suggest anything overpowering. The more interesting the ability is, the more likely you'll be able to have it. Don't just pick a feat as your special ability. If there is something you really want, and you think it is too powerful, let me know and maybe we can come up with a limitation or disadvantage to compensate.

7. All Clerics and Holy Warriors must choose a god or goddess. Other characters are encouraged to choose one as well.

8. Languages are chosen from the list on the Campagin Primer page.

9. Please fill the character survey out or come up with a detailed background. If you need help or suggestions, let me know. I will likely incorporate things from your character's past into the adventures.

10. The more you guys put into the campaign before it starts, the more you'll get out of it. Players often complain that their character has no reason to be doing what they are doing. Create one. There is no reason that some of your characters haven't met before, or grew up together, or have someone in common, or whatever, to give them reason to stick together and help each other. If you have character goals, I will add them to the adventures. This will not be a campaign of steamrolling you in one direction. You'll have plenty of reasons to make the choices you make, and the adventures will go where you take them.
