"They're coming!" shouted the initiate as he hastily decended the white granite steps and into the entry hall. He was white with fear.
A tall, muscular man dressed in the trappings of a Keeper spoke in stern voice, "Calm down Olen. There is no reason to panic. We shall do what we can, and no more."
Olen suddenly stopped and the fear seemed to recede. "I understand, Keeper, but if the amulet falls into their hands, what then? All might be lost."
"Nonsense. Everything would right itself in time," spoke the Keeper with decisive confidence. "The course of the river can not be changed, only the speed of the flow and the depth of the water. Still, we will do our best to keep them from damming it. Seal the entrance, and meet me in the Chamber of Sand. I have something to attend to."
"Yes, Keeper." Olen moved to the entrance and began to seal it by setting the locks. He carefully recounted their movements in his mind, and one by one, turned them into position, remembering to throw the levers controlling the outer seal at the correct moments. Once he was finished, he quickly turned and made for corrider that lead to the lower levels. As he hurried away, he fiddled with the miniature hourglass around his neck, and uttered a prayer to Eos, and wondered what the coming minutes would bring.
